Originally named Alkali (after the Alkali Canyon, which it was located at the mouth of), the name was changed to Arlington in 1885 when the town was incorporated.  The origin of the name Arlington is uncertain- it is presumed to be either after a prominent resident, Nathan Arlington Cornish, or after Arlington, VA in honor of that town's prominent resident of the day, southern General Robert E. Lee. Glover built a sawmill and store, and within a year and a half of his purchase the county had grown from a dozen families in a 1700 sq mile area to better than 100 people.   <br>Spokane grew relatively quickly, based on its position near the Mullan Road and its location as a central trading point between Colville and Lewiston.  In 1881 the Northern Pacific Railroad entered Spokane, and in 1883 the NPRR completed its transcontinental route, funneling large amounts of traffic through Spokane thereafter.   <br>Much of downtown Spokane as seen here was shortly to be destroyed, when an 1889 fire burned thirty-two city blocks. Though the military road was never fully completed to the north, Snohomish still became the major center of the area as a result of the crossing.   <br>Snohomish was considered the area's major center for many years to come.  Gradually the distinction turned to Everett, located five miles to the northeast on the Puget Sound.  However, at the time pictured here, Snohomish was still the most important town.  The railroad bridge pictured on the right here was completed on September 22, 1888, and cemented the towns importance as a lumber center.   <br>The insets: The Blackman Block  was the home of Blackman Bros., a general merchandise store, as well as a jeweler, a confectioner, and several lawyers.
