The structure is nearly complete, though the bridge leading to the front entrance is unfinished. The Fieldhouse was built in 1929 at a cost of $200,000 paid for by the Associated Students. It was named in 1963 for the University's noted football coach from 1926-42, "Babe" Hollingbery. In 17 seasons his teams won 99 games, lost 57, and tied 19. He developed several All-Americans, took his 1930 team to the Rose Bowl, and was instrumental in establishing the East-West Shrine Football Game. Hollingbery Fieldhouse was the foundation of the Physical Education, Intramural and Recreation programs at the university. It has been heavily used over the years, especially during the winter months as the primary indoor practice training facility, as a drill field for the ROTC Programs and as an intramural field. In World War II, it was used extensively as a drill field and as physical education exercise facility for the armed services. It is an imposing structure, much less ornate than the adjacent Bohler Gym, almost having the character of an industrial building. Its pitched roof echoes the form of Smith Gym. The brick structure visible in the background through the pine trees is one of the oldest campus reservoirs. Built during the earliest days of WSU, the reservoir was no longer in use by the 1930s. It was razed during the construction of the CUB. Designed by John Maloney in modern functional style, the Compton Union Building (CUB) was built in 1951 at a cost of $3 million and named for Wilson Compton, WSU President 1944 to 1951. The CUB was financed by the Regents through bond issues totaling $2,613,000, with the remaining funds contributed by the Associated Students (ASSCW). In 1969, a major renovation added an additional floor to the building including hotel rooms. Holland Library was built between 1948 and 1950, and was named after the former Washington State College President Ernest O. Holland. Landscaping is now present with trees and hedges placed around the building; a pair of street lamps frame the entrance. Morrill Hall was named for Senator Justin S. Morrill, whose bill of 1862 provided for the foundation of land grant institutions. Begun in 1901, it remained unfinished until 1903 due to legal problems that temporarily halted all building funds. Designed by Josenhans & Allen at a cost $33,000, Morrill Hall originally served as the chemistry building (until the construction of Fulmer Hall). An innovative feature of the structure was the placement of the general laboratory on the top floor to provide better ventilation.
